Description
This image was created from a 35 mm slide of homes in the Harsen's Island Flats, an area north of Detroit on Lake St. Clair. I did a feature story of the area for the Detroit News Magazine in the 70's, and this was a double page spread in the article. The area was a favorite of Theodore Roosevelt for Duck hunting. During prohibition times, rum runners used the shallow waters from Canada to smuggle alcoholic goods to the US.
Years later, I scanned the slide and made a digital painting by manually doing the brushstrokes with my digital pen and tablet. I used a background that replicates the look of textured paper.
